Tips to use who funds them

Try to find as many interesting facts as possible about the donors behind political donations using your favourite search engine. These might include;

  • Any news articles, particularly those related to policy.
  • Background information about the individual or company, what is their profession, or in the case of a company what does the company do.
  • Any official capacity that the individual or owner of the company has, particularly within a political party or organisation.
  • Any political views that and individual or owner of a company has expressed.
  • If the donation is to a local office, rather than national, can you find any links between the donors and their local politicians?

How to find information

Donors fall into two main categories; organisations (mostly companies and trade unions), and individuals.

Companies

Companies are a little easier to research, as the office details and location are published, and you can find details at companies house using the company registration number. It is also worth trying to find out who owns a company, and research the individual as well.

Individuals

Individuals are harder to research, as the only information listed at the electoral commission is a name. If the donation is registered at a local branch, then try searching for the individual along with their location. If the donation is to head office, then try searching for the individual along with the party name, and possibly with the words “donation” , “donor” or “politics”

Please be sure that you have the correct individual before posting anything on the site!
